The Academic Registrar of Makerere University has provided guidelines for new students on how to change their course or subject.
(a) Changing the Programme
The selection process for specific programmes at Makerere University considers each candidate's performance and their order of programme choices, taking into account subject combinations and timetable limitations. As a result, there is usually little need to change the programme or subjects. However, if some admitted students do not take up their offers, vacant spots can be filled through a change of programme or subjects. The process for changing the programme will be conducted online.
To request a change of programme or subjects, students are required to pay an application fee of Shs.6,000/=.
(b) Changing Subjects
Students in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, or the College of Education and External Studies may wish to change their subjects. The process for changing subjects will also be done online, upon payment of Shs.6,000.
It's important for students to be aware that changing one subject may result in a change of school. Therefore, before applying to change their programmes, school, or subjects, students are encouraged to seek advice on the cut-off points for programmes, specific subject requirements, and possible subject combinations.
Students are warned that changing a programme or transferring to another subject or school without proper authority will result in discontinuation from the university.
If a student is granted permission to change their programme or subject(s), they will receive a letter confirming the change. Upon receiving this letter, the student should complete the ACCEPTANCE FORM and submit a copy to the Undergraduate Admissions and Records Office (Room 303), as well as the former and new College/School and ICT Office (Level 6, Room 615) in the Senate Building.
The change of programme/subjects will be conducted online, and the start dates for the process will be announced during the orientation week or afterwards.
Note: It is advisable for students to only apply for programmes that meet the cut-off points. Further guidance should be sought if necessary.
